Should We Just Throw The Baby Out With The Bathwater? by David Yeubanks. This was originally a blog post I added to the original TruthForFree.com website on January 27th, 2014. I received a request to make it into a PDF eBook so that it could be easily shared with people and here it is for anyone interested. The post deals with the mindset so many church-going people express when they meet those of us who do not any longer live our lives centered around the church organization; While some of them find agreement with our dissatisfaction with religion in general, they often tell us to be careful about “throwing the baby out with the bathwater” (as if that were a bad idea).
Though some who are presently enamored with church world might find my conclusions difficult to embrace, my post here intends to express a Scriptural motivation that is backed by a genuine relationship with the Lord. In truth, there is no other option for me personally than to throw out the whole thing… No, not the Gospel of Jesus Christ… No, not the Scriptures… No, not fellowship with His body… but yes, absolutely; the whole concept that demands “church” (i.e. what I call “churchianity”) be a central part of the Believer’s life – that needs to go! Without shame I will tell you, I do not accept any such idea that “churchianity” is essential at all and this writing explains why. If someone worries that I might infect someone else with this controversial way of thinking, I can only pray that such a blessed event might occur – for the sake of Christ Jesus who is the ONE AND ONLY Lord of His ONE AND ONLY Body!
When The Church Leaves The Building by David Fredrickson. This is the story of a man and congregation that valued God’s life above their own experience and the amazing journey that led them to undertake. They discovered what most people only dare to dream. You’ll be shocked at the choices they made and inspired by the lessons they learned. This is not the story of a well constructed success strategy and how to implement it, but of a people willing to go on a journey even though they could only see one step at a time and whose destination was far from clear. The costs were considerable, the rewards far greater. This man is my friend, David Fredrickson, and this is an excellent book! Great thanks to David for allowing me to post it here as a free download. If you would like to order hard copies of the book, they are really cheap and available through David’s website, www.familyroommedia.com, which also contains some great information, including DVDs you can order that deal with leaving organized religion behind, movie reviews, and some free funny videos about organized religion that you can watch right on the website.
The Great Ecclesiastical Conspiracy by G. Davis, M. Clark & K. Pearson. Why did the Greek words presbytery (the elderly), apostle (envoy or sent one), and deacon (servant) remain un-translated into the Anglicized form? Why was the Greek word presbuteros (older or elderly) translated priest? Why was the word office added throughout the New Testament when it is not in the Greek text? Why indeed! There is little doubt that these words remained un-translated and others were mistranslated so the clergy could redefine them, interpreting them with the strongest institutional and hierarchical connotations. Was this mere ignorance, or a means of creating a ruling class of super saints? The book is also available in regular HTML.
Free Indeed? by Shean Smith. In clear, easy-to-understand prose, author Shean Smith explores how the church has muddied the waters of religion. Each chapter takes up a different aspect of church-going, from tithing to assembly, and explores why these church regulations sometimes do more harm than good. Smith offers concrete suggestions for making more of your faith, including making Christ the center of your life and doing away with the guilt forced on you by the church. This warm and inspirational book can help you realize your freedom in Christ. Note: Clicking the book’s image takes you to a separate download page with more information about this great book!
Soul Rape by Shean Smith. Once again author Shean Smith (author of “Free Indeed”) takes up his writer’s pen to address the subject of getting free of organized religion in this latest work called “Soul Rape”… but this time he delves a bit deeper into the psychology of church mentality and its effect. Through his examination of history, psychology, Scripture and personal insight and experience, Shean suggests some strong answers to questions such as, “Why do people hate going to church, distrust clergy, avoid religion, but often continue to search for God?” What is it about “church” that occupies so much attention, both of those who attend religious meetings and even of those who proclaim freedom from it? Have Christians been wrong to worry so much about finding the right way to “do church” or where to “go” to church? The answers may shock or even offend some… but Shean handles the subject with heart-felt understanding, clear logic and biblical truth. This is a really good book! Note: Clicking on the book’s image will take you to a separate download page with more information about this excellent book!
The Bride: The Daughter of Zion by Christian Pellone. Today’s churches have brought forth immature Christians because their “leaders” have taken the place of Christ. They have made the saints of God dependent on them instead of the Lord and thus have prevented their spiritual growth in Christ. This book will encourage and bless you greatly; especially if you are new in your exodus from organized religion or considering what to do about a mounting disillusionment with typical church life.

Come Out of Her My People by Peter Whyte. This fantastic book by Peter Whyte was originally published in 1992 by Successful Christian Living (SCL) in South Africa. Previously, it had been my understanding that the title was out of print and I was unable to find any source that offered new or used copies of the work, so I scanned the book myself, converted it to Adobe PDF format, and then mailed a copy to SCL asking for updated contact information and formal permission to share the download. After a few months I received word from the author’s friend, Jamie Campbell, that the book was still available through her publishing company, Lux Verbi-BM, but to wait until I obtained permission from Peter before offering it as a download. On July 6, 2006 I received a personal, hand-written letter from the author, Peter Whyte (now in his 80’s), granting me permission to offer the book free of charge as a download from this site. The 5th page of the e-book (which follows the Table of Contents page) contains all contact information for the author, publisher and distributor of the book (whom you may order hard copies through if you wish). Feel free to download this excellent book and share it with friends and family. In Peter’s letter to me he said, “You are very welcome to put any of my writings on the Internet via your website. I do not write for gain. God’s message is free, but unfortunately book publishers have to try and protect their interests: – I do not accept royalties.”
Come Out of Her My People (in CHINESE) by Peter Whyte. Peter Whyte’s incredible book “Come Out of Her My People” is now available in the Chinese language!!! Our friend, Lana Hu, lovingly donated her time and effort to translate this entire book into Chinese. Please feel free to share this with your Chinese-speaking friends and family!
Eating Sacred Cows by Graeme Carlé. This fine little book, authored by Bible teacher Graeme Carlé, was first published in 1994 and remains one of the best concise publications explaining the biblical tithe in very easy to understand language, and why it has no place amongst Christians today! Graeme also serves the body of Christ in the capacity of a pastoral figure; however, as this book illustrates, Graeme demonstrates a clear understanding of the difference between common-practice hierarchical leadership structures and big-business style religious organization compared to the simple yet profound kind of loving fellowship we see in Scripture. Graeme’s approach does not concern itself with the various methods by which Christians choose to meet together, but rather emphasizes the organic quality of the Church and I love the way this book brings out a better understanding of the Old Testament tithe and shows that, in reality, it was essentially a three to five week holiday intended for THE TITHER HIMSELF to enjoy. Graeme will show how the modern doctrine of tithing is so far removed from what Scripture so basically and clearly presents that you will shake your head and wonder how on earth things got so twisted up as they are in most churches today! This book is truly unique among the many other books available concerning this subject! My only slight disagreement with the author is in one very small paragraph of the book he makes some comparisons of the Old Testament Temple and Levites to modern-day churches, worship leaders and ministers. Even so, this mention does not come across as legalistic or even hierarchical and it’s clear his view is simply meant to show that ministry is intended to functionally serve the body of Christ out of love, not as lords over the body, but as fellow workers together for God’s good purposed. This is a beautifully-written book and, as I mentioned before, very easy to read and comprehend. If you want to understand how true biblical tithing worked during the Old Testament period and then see how the New Covenant affords a much different way to look at giving, take the time to read this excellent book!
Who Are The Clergy? by David Yeubanks. This article/e-book examines some of the typical modern day concepts surrounding what many refer to as “clergy” and “laity” as well as some of the common ideas people tend to hold concerning “church” and “ministerial service”. This article introduces some sincere biblical challenges to traditional religious norms but seeks to emphasize a greater central focus on the Lordship of Jesus Christ, His Gospel and the manifestation of His kingdom. I wrote this article/e-book back in April of 2005 with the editing assistance of some friends of mine. This version is in PDF format, but is also available in HTML if you prefer.
The Pilgrim Church by E.H. Broadbent. It ought to be obvious to even the casual observer of history that the real story of the Church is not the one recorded in secular history. This classic work by E.H. Broadbent (1861-1945) demonstrates that the true heart of this amazing drama is not even recorded in church history books. This is the saga of those intrepid believers (over the centuries), who not only were persecuted by civil authorities, but were denounced, defamed, and decimated by the professing church. This intriguing book was introduced to me by my friend Matthew G. a while back. At the time of posting this link I am still reading the book (I purchased my hard copy through a publisher in Canada that had recently taken up the task of restoring it to print). This is one of the only titles I do not host locally on this website (due to copyright uncertainties). This particular ebook edition was produced by an Australian organization called Project Gutenberg Australia eBooks, which creates ebooks from printed editions that are considered to be in the public domain in Australia. It also, unfortunately, does not contain the excellent forward by Dave Hunt, which is present in the 1999 hard cover edition of the book. I cannot confirm whether this link will always be available or not so you may want to view it while you can. If you would like to purchase a hard copy of the book, visit thepilgrimchurch.com.
Corinthian Elders by Jack Fortenberry. We are to be disciples of Christ but not of Christian leaders. Corinthian Elders addresses the Pauline concern that following leaders will harm our relationship with Christ. The book concludes that following teachers hindered the Corinthians from abiding in Christ and this is corroborated by passages in Colossians where Paul was alarmed when believers were following authoritative leaders. The author, Jack, was gracious to share this PDF version of the book freely and readers can also purchase a hard copy from Amazon.com. This brother’s heart is in the message, not the money, and for this reason I am happy to encourage those who have been blessed by this book to bless the author in return with your prayers, encouraging feedback, and even financially if the Lord inspires you (such as through purchasing the book from Amazon.com). God bless! If you would like to purchase a hard copy of the book, visit Amazon.com. Falling Away From The Simple Faith by George Davis & Michael Clark. (includes Part 2: Unreplacing Jesus) Many believe that there will be a falling away, yet future, and view those who depart from their ranks as apostate. On the contrary, the falling away has already happened, and there is an ongoing move of God’s Spirit to restore what was lost. For it to be otherwise, the church would have had to remain pure down through the years, and that would require a total rewriting of history. No, history attests to a radical departure from the faith. This fantastic book is authored by our friends at awildernessvoice.com.
So You Don’t Want To Go To Church Anymore? by Jake Coleson. What would you do if you thought you’d met John the Apostle and he told you things that resonated with the deepest longings of your heart? Perhaps that may sound preposterous to some, but over a four-year period the author of this story (who calls himself Jake Colsen) tells his story of twelve life-changing conversations he had with a mysterious stranger that changed virtually everything he believed about God, the Christian life and the nature of the church. This is an engaging, convicting and inspiring true story that chronicles this man’s encounter with a brother in Christ whose character manifested Jesus so purely that he thought, “if I didn’t know better, I would have to presume this was John the Apostle.” Of course, that is not the intended conclusion of the book and you will have to read the entire story to understand it all, but it presents a fascinating journey, which the author warns has not been easy. Most people who start this way end up stopping for various reasons before they get to the greatest joy and freedom imaginable. The author tells the story just as it unfolded and leaves you to make your own conclusions about who the characters really are and how they may relate to our own lives. It’s an interesting approach to telling the story rather than just defining everyone in the story outright. I thoroughly enjoyed the read! The hope is to find those people who are not afraid to ask the difficult questions and pursue the fullness of God’s promise for his believers and his Church. Most importantly, the hope is that this story helps you to understand better who God really is, who you really are, and what He’d always intended his Church to be. Please read this excellent e-book, offered freely by the author. I believe you will be greatly encouraged! Simply click the image of the book above to open the e-book (Note: You will need the Adobe Reader to view this document). Also, I encourage you to visit the author’s website for more information about this book: http://www.jakecolsen.com/
The Naked Church by Wayne Jacobsen. Written by a former institutional church pastor who worked in this capacity for 20 years before he felt the Lord was calling him out of status-quo church experience. Wayne shares his testimony, which I’m sure will encourage many people who have found themselves confused, burned out and disillusioned by their church experience. Discover how intimacy with the Living God and his family can fulfill your deepest hungers. The Naked Church is an invitation for believers to forsake superficial Christianity and discover true intimacy with God. This compelling book (now offered freely by Wayne in this full PDF e-book edition) will challenge you to look beyond the externals of contemporary church life with its glittering buildings, extensive programs, beloved celebrities and political muscle and find a relationship with God that will bring his powerful, life-changing presence into everyday circumstances. Excellent book! Highly recommended reading… and thanks Wayne for offering it freely!
The Way of a Man with a Maid (newly updated edition). This is one of the best books you will ever read concerning the subject of the “courtship and betrothal” movement that has influenced so many churches in our day… In fact, it’s one of the only books available that thoroughly examines the problems inherent in the ideology. Click on the book’s image to view or download the full version of the book in PDF format, provided free by permission of the author! Robin Phillips, author, is a man who is definitely not ignorant about the dangers and biblical errancies intricately woven into and saturated throughout this popular teaching. Robin was himself raised under this teaching (his own parents being some of the most prominent, well-known proponents of courtship theology known to Christiandom) and has been involved (on some personal and experiential level) with some of the most prominent leaders around the country who teach the courtship concepts. This book will draw your attention to the simple truth of Scripture and will encourage and help you understand God’s heart in the process of building positive, godly male-female relationships and strong marriages. The book has recently been updated and is available in hard copy from Amazon.com as well. For more information visit Robin’s blog page. NOTE from Dave: It may be of interest to some visitors of TruthForFree.com that Robin is currently a member of an institutional, denominational church and has recently amended his book to reflect some of his changes in viewpoints since re-involving himself with organized religion (the above link represents the most current available edition). That having been said, he remains a gracious brother who expresses a deep love for the Lord and Scriptural truth as well as personal integrity. While I may not agree with everything he now believes concerning “church world”, this book is still a wonderful piece of work that I believe will help many who have been influenced or damaged by the modern courtship and betrothal movement. I am also very happy that Robin has given me permission to share his book freely on this site. The new edition includes a preface of explanation of the changes which are updated from the original edition. If you would like to order a hard copy of the book, I encourage you to find it on Amazon.com. It is fairly priced. |
