Did Death Occur Before The Fall – This is an interesting article and a subject I have personally been exploring a bit. I don’t share this as a dogmatic opinion, but for discussion sake. I have always believed that death entered the world because of the fall of Adam and I have always believed that view is an essential contribution to the Gospel narrative; however, I am wondering if this has been a little bit over-simplified by many in the Christian community (including myself)… Is it possible that God actually designed man to have an expiration date? Is it possible that he also designed animals to include carnivores that rely on a meat-centric diet BEFORE the fall? What about lions? They seem DESIGNED to thrive on meat… Does the Bible actually teach that they were vegetarians before the fall and then were somehow re-created behave completely differently when sin entered the picture? The Bible clearly deals with SPIRITUAL death FOR MAN as a result of sin, but is it possible the religious men have extended this definition to natural death and especially applied it to the entire animal kingdom without clear reference of Scripture? While re-reading the popular passages about sin causing death, I noticed this detail; that the reference is a SPIRITUAL context. I am not concluding that physical death was not involved, but the thought intrigues me… The challenge many Christians have with a “carnivore” diet is they look at the Garden of Eden and conclude that we were made to be vegetarians, but is that true? What if it is actually NOT true? Does the fact that man was permitted to eat the fruit of every seed-bearing plant mean that meat was never intended to be part of his diet… even an essential part? If you’re not afraid to explore this question, this is a decent article to review.
Could There Have Been Any Death Before The Fall – This is another interesting article on the subject of death before the fall; asking the question as to whether or not it’s possible and, in fact, suggests that the Bible actually may teach that there was some measure of death before the fall. Many young-earth Creationists avoid such notions, thinking that it leads away from the Gospel in some way; however, is that just a religious fear based on the way these teachers were themselves manipulated to believe, rather than drawing clear doctrine from Scripture? The Bible actually does seem to make references to death occurring BEFORE the fall, and many Christians who struggle with this idea have had to find clever ways to work around such passages and re-interpret the obvious implications to hang on desperately to their established narrative. I would include myself there as well… This is a subject I am enjoying exploring a bit. I have no dogmatic approach here, but I find this a persuasive consideration. One of my own questions refers to the detail that God put a Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve were allowed to eat of it… BUT, when they sinned, they were expelled from the Garden, an angel was placed at the entrance to keep man from being able to consume food from the Tree of Life! Why? If man was created to be immortal, why have an immortality-producing fruit within reach and why shield him from the Tree of Life after he sinned, if it were not that this Tree was responsible for adding to man’s longevity? Man seems to have been DESIGNED to expire (outside of the matter of walking in obedience to God and thus being allowed to eat from the Tree of Life), and had to be blocked from the Tree to avoid him being able to continue to live forever. This may have implications toward the notion that animal death may have also been an expect part of the original circle of life that GOD ALSO DESIGNED and that for the benefit of man. When people just presume that all death is bad because they don’t like it, does that actually make all death bad? If God designed it this way and actually called it GOOD then isn’t it actually good, regardless of our feelings? Is God supreme in His wisdom, or are our feelings more important and should those feelings dominate our perspectives? If God designed animals to be used also for food in this life, then why should we groan at this as a grievous thing? Doesn’t the Bible even suggest that there will be “choice meats and fine wine” for His people to consume once death has at last been vanquished? It actually does say that in Isaiah 25:6 and is also alluded to in the New Testament with respect to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Lots of questions to consider.
